A U.S. study recently conducted by Dove found that, overwhelmingly, new mothers feel the media depicts an outdated, unrealistic portrait of the “perfect mom”. Modern moms do not see themselves as the superhuman, one-dimensional taskmasters portrayed in advertising and pop culture, yet this stereotype persists. More moms are working outside the home than ever before and are continuing to pursue their passions, which many say makes them a better mom. As the ways in which moms define motherhood continue to evolve, it’s important to understand that they will be less receptive to seeing themselves defined in the media by this outdated standard.
In a study of U.S. moms conducted by Dove, 95% of new moms said they think real motherhood is different than how it’s portrayed in the media.
